The average Saddlebred stands at 16hh and weighs in at 500kg. There is no upper or lower height limit, some purebred Saddlebreds in the UK stand as little as 15hh. First crosses (50%) are a popular choice and many can be found in the western arena.
The Saddlebred is reknowned for his spectacular 5 gaits, up-headed carriage and crowd stopping way of going. BUT this is all in his way of training.
NEVER THOUGHT OF THE SADDLEBRED AS A WESTERN HORSE? Then read on ...
He was originally bred, as were all the American breeds, as a utility horse. He would work in the fields all day, either with his owner riding him, or hitched up; would drive the family to church on a Sunday; and would be the favourite of the children the rest of the time. He is inherently good-natured and eager to please. He is a natural athelete, with a ground covering stride and well engaged hocks, which make him a natural for almost any discipline, provided he is given suitable training.
The movements required of a western horse come naturally to the American Saddlebred, and with all things, he carries his work out with an air of grace and supremacy.
SO, if you are looking for a stylish mount, one that looks forward to his work every day and is a joy to own, then you need look no further ...
... you need a SADDLEBRED!
